ImageHey Explorers, What's up!
A cutting-edge solution to global energy consumption has been introduced by researchers from the Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST). The team, led by Professor Bonghoon Kim, has developed a 3D Smart Energy Device capable of both heating and cooling, providing a versatile and sustainable solution to energy usage in buildings and electronic devices.
This innovation, which appeared as a cover feature in Advanced Materials, addresses the significant energy demand associated with temperature regulation, which accounts for nearly 50% of global energy use. The device employs a unique dual-function design that can switch between radiative cooling and solar absorption.

How It Works
The smart energy device features a dynamic 3D structure. When open, the device exposes its lower layer, made of silicone elastomer and silver, which radiates heat away, providing a cooling effect. When closed, a black-painted surface absorbs solar heat, generating warmth. This ability to reversibly control heating and cooling allows for application in both macro-scale buildings and micro-scale electronics, making it adaptable for a range of industrial uses.
The research, supported by institutions like KAIST and Korea University, successfully demonstrated the device’s effectiveness on various substrates such as glass, aluminum, and even human skin. This technology has the potential to significantly cut energy consumption and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by optimizing heating and cooling functions in real-world environments.
Implications for the Future
By integrating eco-friendly energy sources like solar absorption and radiative cooling, DGIST’s 3D device opens new possibilities for energy-efficient temperature control. Its innovative design could help combat pressing global challenges such as climate change and resource depletion by reducing the carbon footprint associated with traditional energy consumption.
This breakthrough in smart energy devices can revolutionize how we approach energy efficiency, making temperature regulation more sustainable and eco-friendly in a variety of applications.
