Microsoft has rolled out an exciting new feature for Windows 11 Insider Preview users. The latest update, build 26120.2992 (KB5050083), brings semantic search capabilities to Snapdragon-powered PCs equipped with Copilot+ functionality. Available now in the Dev Channel, this update reimagines how users search for files, images, and settings by incorporating natural language processing powered by artificial intelligence (AI).

What’s New with Semantic Search?
Traditionally, searching for a file on Windows meant using specific keywords or file names. The new semantic indexing feature takes this experience a step further by enabling users to search using conversational commands. Instead of typing rigid keywords, users can describe what they are looking for in plain language. For example:
  • Typing “bridge at sunset” will surface images of sunsets with bridges.
  • Searching “change my theme” in Settings will quickly bring up theme customization options.
This feature is integrated into Windows Search and accessible through File Explorer, the taskbar search box, and the Settings app. Microsoft emphasizes that the AI-powered functionality works locally on the device, ensuring usability even without an internet connection.

Supported Devices and Languages
Initially, this advanced search feature is available only on Snapdragon X series chipsets. However, Microsoft plans to extend the functionality to AMD and Intel-based Copilot+ PCs in a future update.
Currently, the feature supports six languages:
  • Chinese
  • English
  • French
  • German
  • Japanese
  • Spanish
Supported file formats include:
  • Documents: .txt, .pdf, .docx, .doc, .rtf, .pptx, .ppt, .xls, .xlsx
  • Images: .jpg/.jpeg, .png, .gif, .bmp, .ico
Limitations in the Preview Version
While promising, the feature in its preview state comes with a few limitations:
  1. Local Files Only: Semantic search works only for files saved locally in indexed locations. Users can customize indexed locations by navigating to Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows. Enabling the "Enhanced" option will index the entire PC.
  2. Settings Search: Searches related to system settings currently function only within the Settings app. Microsoft plans to expand this functionality to the taskbar search box in future updates.
  3. No Cloud Support Yet: Files stored in cloud services are not searchable through this feature, but Microsoft hinted at plans to integrate cloud search capabilities down the road.

Availability and Rollout
The new semantic search feature is exclusive to the Windows 11 Insider Preview build in the Dev Channel for now. Microsoft notes that it may take weeks or even months before this functionality is rolled out to all users.
The Future of Search on Windows
Microsoft’s push for semantic search aligns with its broader vision of leveraging AI to enhance productivity and user experience. By allowing natural language searches, this innovation simplifies finding files, images, and settings, making Windows 11 more intuitive than ever before.
As the feature evolves, users can expect broader compatibility with cloud storage, expanded language support, and deeper integration with system-wide search functionalities. For now, Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs lead the charge in this AI-driven transformation.
