It is a time for devotees to express gratitude for the blessings of life, health, and prosperity, while also strengthening familial ties through rituals and communal gatherings. The festival emphasizes the importance of sustainability and respect for the environment, as participants offer prayers and offerings to the sun and water bodies.What is Chhath Puja?
▎Significance
1. Worship of Surya: Chhath Puja is dedicated to Surya, the Sun God, who is considered the source of life and energy. Devotees believe that worshiping Surya can bring health, prosperity, and happiness to their families.
2. Gratitude and Fulfillment of Wishes: The festival is also a time for expressing gratitude for the bounties of nature and fulfilling wishes. Many devotees observe the fast to seek blessings for the well-being of their family members.
3. Environmental Connection: The festival highlights the importance of nature and encourages respect for water bodies, as offerings are made at rivers or ponds.
▎Rituals Chhath Puja involves a series of rituals that span four days:
1. Nahay Khay (Day 1): This day marks the beginning of the festival. Devotees take a holy dip in a river or water body and prepare a special meal, usually consisting of rice and lentils, which is consumed after offering to the Sun God.
2. Kharna (Day 2): On this day, devotees fast from sunrise until sunset. In the evening, they prepare offerings, including kheer (a sweet rice pudding) and fruits, which are offered to the Sun God after performing rituals.
3. Sandhya Arghya (Day 3): This is the main day of Chhath Puja. Devotees gather at riverbanks during sunset to offer prayers to Surya. They present offerings in bamboo baskets filled with fruits, sweets, and other items. The rituals are performed with great devotion, often accompanied by traditional songs.
4. Usha Arghya (Day 4): On the final day, devotees rise early and again gather at the riverbank to offer prayers to Surya at sunrise. After completing the rituals, they break their fast and share prasad (blessed food) with family and friends.
