The Rituals and Their Meaning

Nahay Khay (Day 1): The festival starts with a day of purification. Devotees clean their homes, take holy baths, and cook vegetarian meals without garlic or onions. This ritual represents a symbolic cleansing and the beginning of a spiritual journey.

Kharna (Day 2): Devotees fast from sunrise to sunset, breaking only in the evening for kheer (a sweet rice dish) and fruits. This day focuses on self-control and willpower.

Sandhya Arghya (Day 3): The most beautiful Chhath ritual occurs when devotees gather on riverbanks or water bodies to offer arghya (offerings) to the setting sun. The evening is packed with songs, prayers, and great devotion as devotees seek blessings for their families and communities.

Usha Arghya (Day 4): On the final day, devotees return to the water at sunrise to pray to the rising sun and complete their worship. Then they break their fast and share the prasad with their friends and family.
