As AI technology advances, it brings many benefits but also serious risks, like the rise of AI voice cloning scams. Recently, Sunil Mittal, chairman of Bharti Airtel, revealed a shocking instance of voice cloning at the NDTV World Summit. Scammers cloned his voice using AI, almost fooling company executives into transferring a large sum of money. The cloned voice was eerily accurate, which highlights how convincing these scams can be.

What is AI Voice Cloning?
AI voice cloning is a method where artificial intelligence creates a near-identical digital version of a person’s voice. With just a 30-second recording, the technology can replicate someone’s speech and even match tones, allowing scammers to impersonate family members, friends, or officials. Although this technology has positive uses, like realistic text-to-speech applications and customized customer service voices, it’s also being misused for fraud.
How Do AI Voice Cloning Scams Work?
In these scams, fraudsters call individuals, pretending to be someone they know, often in a stressful or urgent situation. Scammers may claim that a loved one is in an accident, involved in a legal case, or held by authorities and request money for their "release" or medical care. Victims often report that the cloned voices are convincing, with scammers sometimes even simulating distressing sounds, like crying, to create an emotional urgency.
Detecting and Avoiding AI Voice Cloning Scams
Here are some key ways to protect yourself from falling victim to these scams:
  1. Check the Country Code: Always examine the caller’s country code. Scammers often use numbers from outside India, with some reports of calls originating from Pakistan (+92). Indian government officials will typically call from a +91 number.
  2. Verify the Caller’s Identity: If you receive a call from an unknown number claiming to be a friend or family member in trouble, resist the urge to respond immediately. Try contacting the person through their usual number, or ask detailed questions only they could answer.
  3. Watch for Unnatural Speech Patterns: AI-generated voices sometimes lack natural human rhythm. Look out for things like robotic speech tones, lack of pauses or breaths, and delayed or irrelevant responses. Asking unscripted, specific questions can reveal inconsistencies in the AI responses.
  4. Be Cautious of Unknown Calls: With AI cloning scams on the rise, it’s wise to avoid answering unknown calls, especially those without a +91 prefix. And always verify identities before making any financial transfers, no matter how urgent the situation seems.

AI voice cloning is expected to improve and become more emotionally accurate in the coming years, making it harder to spot these scams. Staying informed about these tactics and following these prevention methods can help protect you and your family from this rising threat.
