Diwali, or the Festival of Lights, is a major celebration in Hinduism, as well as in Jainism and Sikhism. Marking the Hindu New Year, it lasts five days and usually falls in late October or November. Lamps are lit to welcome Lakshmi, the goddess of good fortune, bringing blessings for the year ahead. For Jains, it commemorates Mahavira’s attainment of nirvana, and for Sikhs, it honors the return of Guru Hargobind from captivity.Diwali in 2024 will be celebrated primarily on the evening of October 31.
