The world's largest battery-electric container ship, Greenwater 01, has begun regular service between Shanghai and Nanjing, marking a significant milestone in sustainable maritime transportation. As reported by Interesting Engineering, this innovative vessel, developed by China Ocean Shipping Group (COSCO), boasts zero emissions and a battery capacity of over 50,000 kWh, setting new standards for eco-friendly shipping practices.

Innovative Design and Features

Spanning 119.8 meters in length and 23.6 meters in width, the Greenwater 01 offers a freight capacity of 700 TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units). It can achieve speeds up to 19.4 km/h (12 mph) and is powered by two 900kW main propulsion motors. The vessel’s design includes a state-of-the-art intelligent ship platform system and a situational awareness system, enhancing both operational safety and efficiency.

Revolutionary Battery Technology

One of the standout features of the Greenwater 01 is its swappable battery technology. The vessel uses a movable power exchange system with 36 interchangeable marine containerized batteries. This setup allows for efficient recharging of the ship’s extensive energy storage, which can support over 800 new energy vehicles. For longer voyages, additional 20-foot battery boxes with 1,600 kWh of electricity can be added, enhancing the ship’s range and flexibility. This innovative approach to maritime power management represents a significant industry advancement.

Environmental Benefits and Impact

The Greenwater 01 offers notable environmental advantages, including a fuel savings of 3,900 kg for every 100 nautical miles and a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by 12.4 tons per trip. The vessel is expected to cut 3,217 tons of carbon pollution annually. Its electric propulsion system not only eliminates emissions but also operates silently, setting a new standard for green maritime transportation.
