But did you know the first webcam wasn’t for video calls? It was made to watch a coffee pot! At the University of Cambridge, people used the Trojan Room Coffee Pot Cam to see if there was coffee ready without getting up. It’s a funny start for something we now use every day!

But did you know the first webcam wasn’t for video calls? It was made to watch a coffee pot! At the University of Cambridge, people used the Trojan Room Coffee Pot Cam to see if there was coffee ready without getting up. It’s a funny start for something we now use every day!
The webcam was made to solve a small problem at the University of Cambridge. Researchers often had to get up and check if the coffee pot was full or empty. This was annoying and took time away from their work. To fix this, they set up a camera to watch the coffee pot and show a live picture of it on their computers. This way, they could see if there was coffee ready without leaving their desks.Why was it made and for what purpose?
The 128×128 px greyscale camera was connected to a computer using a special card. Quentin Stafford-Fraser made the program to show the camera feed, and Paul Jardetzky set up the server. Later, Daniel Gordon and Martyn Johnson put the camera online, so people everywhere could see the live feed.Technical Details
