Did You Know?
Your DNA Has Got a Natural Hard Drive Inside it!

Imagine storing all your favorite movies, songs, and more in something as small as a gram of DNA! Thanks to the groundbreaking work of Nick Goldman, this isn't just science fiction anymore. DNA data storage has made huge leaps forward, promising vast, long-term storage capabilities.

DNA, a marvel of nature, can hold up to 215 petabytes of data per gram. The process involves encoding digital data into DNA sequences via synthesis, then decoding it back using DNA sequencing. In 2019, researchers at the University of Washington showcased this potential by successfully storing and retrieving a high-definition video from DNA.

Potential:
DNA is incredibly dense and stable, with one gram capable of storing up to 215 petabytes (1 petabyte = 1000 terabytes = 10 lakh gigabytes) of data.

Encoding Process:
Digital information is encoded into DNA through DNA synthesis, creating custom sequences representing the data. These sequences are stored in a test tube or similar container.

Data Retrieval:
Stored data is accessed and translated back into digital form using DNA sequencing. This process reads the genetic code and converts it into digital data.

Current Research:
Researchers at the University of Washington successfully stored and retrieved a high-definition video from DNA in 2019, demonstrating the feasibility of the concept.

Future Prospects:
Although still in early stages, DNA storage shows significant promise for long-term and large-scale data storage. It is not yet ready for commercial use, but ongoing research is optimistic about its future applications.
Conclusion
