Europe is set to launch its first publicly available international electric flights this summer, marking a significant milestone in sustainable aviation. From July 1 to August 31, 2024, the Electrifly project will operate electric flights between airports in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany, offering passengers a glimpse into the future of zero-emission air travel.Image

Electrifly Project Overview
The Electrifly project is a collaborative effort involving Maastricht Aachen Airport (Netherlands), Liège Airport (Belgium), and Aachen-Merzbrück Airport (Germany). This pioneering initiative aims to demonstrate the feasibility of zero-emission aviation by operating electric flights between these three countries. The project partners include Aachen University of Applied Sciences, aviation operator ASL Group, and Chinese electric car company NIO, which will provide complementary electric ground transportation within a 15-kilometer radius of the participating airports.Image

Pipistrel Velis Electro Aircraft
The Pipistrel Velis Electro, a two-seater electric aircraft certified by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), will be used for the Electrifly project flights. This pioneering aircraft is designed for short-range travel, with journey times between participating airports ranging from 16 to 26 minutes. As the first and currently only electric plane certified by EASA, the Velis Electro represents a significant advancement in sustainable aviation technology.Image

Booking and Passenger Details
Bookings for the Electrifly project are open to the public, with a single trip priced at €120 ($129) and a return journey at €160 ($171). The pricing follows the EASA cost-sharing principle, where expenses are shared between the pilot and passenger. Due to the aircraft's small size, only one passenger can be accommodated per flight, with no luggage allowed. For safety reasons, the combined weight of the pilot and passenger must not exceed 178 kilograms (392 lbs).

Significance and Future Prospects
This pioneering initiative represents a significant step towards sustainable aviation, offering valuable insights for future developments in electric air travel. The Electrifly project aims to showcase the potential of zero-emission aviation and pave the way for integrating electric aircraft into European transportation networks. Findings from this trial period will inform future tests and pilots, potentially leading to expanded routes and improved electric aviation technologies. While currently limited in scope, this project sets a precedent for further advancements in the field, aligning with broader European goals to reduce aviation's carbon footprint and promote sustainable transportation solutions.
