In 2018, BMW achieved a remarkable feat by setting a world record for the longest drift. This record was accomplished using a BMW M5, which drifted continuously for an astonishing 374.2 kilometers over a span of eight hours.
This extraordinary achievement wasn't just about the sheer distance covered but also involved a complex and risky mid-drift refueling process, which added to the spectacle and the technical prowess of the event.
The drift took place on December 11, 2017 at the BMW Performance Center in Greer, South Carolina. The key challenge in setting this record was maintaining a continuous drift for such an extended period. To ensure the car did not run out of fuel, BMW devised an innovative refueling method.
They employed a secondary BMW M5 which was driven alongside the drifting car. This support vehicle was equipped with a custom refueling rig, allowing it to transfer fuel to the primary drifting car without either vehicle stopping. This maneuver required precision driving and coordination between the two vehicles as they had to maintain a consistent speed and distance from each other to avoid any mishaps.
