Hello Explorers
Hope you guys are doing well
Myself Sarthak, in this thread i am discussing a buzzing hot topic with y'all for the VOL. #12 of our Tech Roundtable Series.

When it comes to digital photography, one of the first decisions you'll make is whether to shoot in Raw or JPEG format. Both have advantages, but what differentiate these two format? This gives us our topic of discussion for the Tech Roundtable.

Raw vs JPEG: Which Format is Right for You?

RAW is an uncompressed and unprocessed file format that contains all of the data from your camera's sensor. It works similarly to a digital negative, giving you the most options for post-processing.

Advantages of Raw:
  • Maximum Editing Flexibility: Since Raw files retain all the data, you can recover details in both highlights and shadows.
  • Better Color Accuracy: Raw files store more color information, allowing for more accurate color correction.
  • Non-Destructive Editing: When you edit RAW files, changes are saved separately from the original image data. This means you can always revert to the original, ensuring that your changes are not unsafe.
Disadvantages of Raw:
  • Large File Size: Raw files are significantly larger than JPEGs, they take up more storage space.
  • Requires Post-Processing: To get the most out of a Raw file, you'll need to process it using software like Adobe Lightroom.
  • Compatibility: Not all devices and software can view or edit Raw files.

When to Use RAW:
  • Professional Work: When highest image quality is required, such as in commercial, portrait, and landscape photography.
  • Post-Processing Flexibility: When you plan to make significant changes to the exposure, color, and other settings.
  • Challenging Lighting Conditions: When shooting in situations with high contrast or mixed lighting, RAW files provide additional options for image correction and enhancement.

JPEG is a compressed and processed image format. It applies many in-camera settings such as white balance, contrast and sharpness to create a ready-to-use image with a smaller size.

Advantages of JPEG:
  • Smaller file Size: JPEGs are compressed, making them easier to store and faster to share.
  • Ready to Use: JPEGs are immediately usable and require no post-processing, making them ideal for quick sharing.
  • Widely Compatible: Almost all devices and software can view and edit JPEG files.
Disadvantages of JPEG:
  • Limited Editing Flexibility: Once a JPEG is compressed, most of the original data is lost, making it harder to recover details in highlights and shadows.
  • Lower Image Quality: JPEG compression can result in loss of detail.
  • Color Information Loss: JPEGs store less color data, which can result to a less accurate color grading.

When to Use JPEG:
  • Everyday Photography: casual photography, travel and events where you can quickly share photos to your social media.
  • Limited Storage: When storage is a concern, JPEGs are more efficient.
  • Fast Sharing: For quick sharing on social media or with clients. It’s ready to use without the need for extensive editing.

Which Should You Choose
The choice between RAW and JPEG depends on your needs. RAW works well for landscapes or weddings which need extensive editing. JPEG is better suited for situations when speed is important, when you need to share/post the picture immediately.

For those who want the best of both worlds, many cameras/smartphone offer the option to shoot in both formats simultaneously, allowing you to choose later.
Talking about myself, i mostly shoot in both formats simultaneously and decide later.
Conclusion
Knowing the advantages and disadvantages of each format will help you make better photography decisions, no matter whether you go with Raw or JPEG.

Thank you
