Megapixel: Does It Matter When Posting Online.

We often hear friends or colleagues who aren't into photography asking, "How many megapixels is your camera?" When I say 200MP, they go whoa
If I say 2MP, it's more like meh

Megapixels, often highlighted in camera specifications, refer to the resolution of an image a camera can produce. One megapixel equals one million pixels and higher megapixel counts theoretically allow for more detailed and larger prints.
However, when it comes to sharing photos online, the importance of megapixels diminishes. Most online platforms compress and resize images, often down to a few megapixels or less. For instance, social media sites typically reduce image resolution to speed up loading times and save bandwidth. This means that whether your camera captures 12MP or 108MP, the difference in detail might not be noticeable when the photo is uploaded online.
Additionally, factors like lighting, composition and post processing often play a more significant role in the overall quality of an image than the megapixel count alone. While high megapixels are beneficial for large prints or cropping without losing detail, they aren't as crucial for online sharing, where other aspects of photography take precedence.
While having a high megapixel camera can be advantageous, it’s not the primary factor that will make your photos stand out online. Instead, focusing on your photography skills and understanding the platform's requirements will have a more significant impact.
