Hey Explorers!

Yesterday, my friend Vishist and I had an argument about his phone's battery backup with dark mode turned on and off. I had to explain to him the different types of display technology and how dark mode affects battery life to settle the debate. No worries, if you too are stuck in this debate, here's a short MythBusters article to get you out of that dilemma.
What's the Myth?
Dark Mode on your Phone or PC Saves Battery Life!

Let's Bust!
You've probably heard it a million times: "Turn on dark mode to save battery life!" In recent years, dark mode has become a popular feature in many apps and operating systems. Promoted as a way to reduce eye strain, look cool, and even save battery life, it's no wonder many users have eagerly switched to the darker interface. But does dark mode really save battery life, or is this just another tech myth? Let’s dive into the science behind it and uncover the truth.
The Basics of Dark Mode:
Dark mode, also known as night mode, changes the background of an app or an operating system to black or dark grey while turning the text and other elements white or light grey. This mode is aesthetically pleasing to many users and is believed to reduce glare and eye strain, especially in low-light conditions. But can this simple color switch really make a difference in battery consumption?
Does Dark Mode Really Save Battery?
The short answer is: it depends!
The claim that dark mode saves battery life is rooted in how different screen technologies work, particularly OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) and AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode) displays. These screens are different from the traditional LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) screens in a key way: each pixel in an OLED/AMOLED screen emits its own light, whereas an LCD screen relies on a backlight to illuminate the pixels.
  • OLED Screens: In OLED and AMOLED screens, black pixels are essentially turned off, meaning they don't emit any light and therefore use no power. This is where the idea that dark mode saves battery life comes from. When you use dark mode, many of the pixels on the screen are black and hence off, theoretically using less power than if they were displaying bright colors or white.
  • LCD Screens: Unfortunately, if you have an LCD screen, dark mode won't make a significant difference. LCD screens still require backlighting, even when displaying black pixels. Hence no power saving!
Additional Benefits of Dark Mode
Beyond battery savings, dark mode offers other benefits:
  • Reduced Eye Strain: Many users find that dark mode reduces eye strain, especially in low-light environments.
  • Aesthetic Preference: Some users simply prefer the look of dark mode, finding it more modern and easier on the eyes.
Conclusion
Dark mode isn't just a passing trend; it has real benefits, especially for devices with OLED and AMOLED screens. While it won't dramatically extend battery life for everyone, it can provide noticeable savings under the right conditions. Plus, the reduced eye strain and sleek appearance make it a worthwhile option for many users. So, if you like the look and it helps your eyes, go for it. But don't rely on it solely for extending your battery life, especially if you have an LCD screen.

Informative. I always use dark mode and it helps me to use my phone atleast an hour long compared to light mode. It really makes a difference in AMOLED / OLED displays.

Dark mode's impact on battery life is indeed a topic of debate. As highlighted, the benefits largely depend on the type of display technology your device uses. For OLED and AMOLED screens, where black pixels are effectively "off," dark mode can provide noticeable battery savings. However, for devices with LCD screens, the energy consumption remains mostly unchanged due to the backlighting. Besides potential battery savings, dark mode also offers reduced eye strain and a modern aesthetic, making it a popular choice regardless of battery concerns. Thanks for sharing these insights—it’s always great to clear up such widespread myths! 👏
