Google has announced a series of new updates for its Workspace platform, specifically for Google Chat, which is widely used via Gmail. These enhancements are designed to streamline communication, save time, and make interactions more efficient. Among the key features introduced are video messaging and voice message transcriptions, both of which aim to elevate how users communicate within the platform.

Video Messaging in Google Chat
One of the standout updates is the introduction of video messaging capability within Google Chat. This feature allows users to send video messages in direct messages (DMs), group DMs, and spaces, making communication more dynamic and versatile. Google highlights several practical uses for video messaging, such as allowing customer support teams or sales personnel to share video updates on product features or account changes. Additionally, it can be used to share company-wide updates or serve as a proxy for live meetings that team members may have missed.Image
Like other types of messages, video messages in Google Chat can be interacted with—users can quote, reply, or react to them. All sent and received videos will be conveniently stored in the Media section of the Shared tab for easy access.
However, the video messaging feature comes with certain limitations. Notably, it is currently unavailable on ChromeOS, Linux, and Firefox platforms. Although users on all platforms can receive video messages, the ability to send them is limited to the web version of Google Chat. At the time of writing, video messaging is also unavailable on mobile devices.
Enhanced Voice Messaging with Transcriptions

In addition to video messaging, Google has expanded the capabilities of voice messaging by introducing automatic transcriptions. This feature provides users with a text transcription of voice messages, making it easier to follow conversations without needing to listen to the message in real-time. The new "View transcript" option will appear beneath a voice message, and users can toggle the feature on or off depending on their preference.
Voice message transcriptions are designed with accessibility in mind, as they are treated as readable text for screen readers. Additionally, these transcriptions will adhere to the language settings of the user’s device, making them accessible across different regions and languages.
Conclusion
With the rollout of these new features, Google Chat continues to evolve as a powerful communication tool for Workspace users. Video messaging offers a more flexible way to deliver updates or messages that require a visual component, while voice message transcriptions make voice communications more accessible and easy to navigate. As Google continues to innovate, these updates are poised to enhance user experience and productivity within the platform.
While these updates provide valuable tools for communication, it remains to be seen when Google will expand the availability of video messaging to mobile platforms and broader operating systems. For now, users can benefit from these new features on the web, with more updates likely on the horizon.
