Contextual Smart Replies in Gmail Powered by Gemini AI
Replying to a large volume of emails can be time-consuming, so in 2017, Google introduced smart replies to help users manage their inboxes more efficiently. The initial version displayed three short, one-line responses to incoming emails, but they often lacked the depth or detail required for meaningful replies.
In a recent blog post, Google announced a significant update: contextual smart replies. Powered by its Gemini AI models, this feature now generates contextually accurate responses that appear when users open an email.
After clicking "Reply," multiple suggested responses will appear at the bottom of the screen, showing the first few words of each reply. When one is selected, the AI crafts a complete response, sometimes spanning several paragraphs and including all the necessary information requested by the sender. Users can then choose to edit the reply or send it as-is.
