Ganesh Chaturthi is a ten-day Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed son of Shiva and Parvati. Ganesha, known by 108 names, is the Lord of wisdom, arts, and sciences, and is worshipped at the start of rituals as the God of beginnings. One version of his birth story says Parvati created him from her body’s dirt to guard her while she bathed. When Shiva returned and Ganesha unknowingly blocked him, a fight ensued, leading Shiva to sever Ganesha's head. Shiva replaced it with an elephant's head to appease Parvati and revive him. Another legend states that Shiva and Parvati created Ganesha at the request of the Devas to serve as a vighnakartaa (obstacle creator) for rakshasas (demons) and a vighnahartaa (obstacle remover) for the Devas.
