AMOLED displays are renowned for their superior quality. These displays are composed of minuscule units known as pixels, with each pixel containing a trio of LEDs in Red, Green, and Blue. The information on a device's screen is presented through the light emitted by these pixels. Imagine discovering that as you read this sentence, the pixels on your screen are flickering on and off. It's true, but you don't perceive this flickering because it occurs at an incredibly fast rates usually between 240 to 500 times per seconds which is too quick for the human eye to detect. This phenomenon is known as Pulse Width Modulation (PWM).
You might wonder, why can't the display simply remain on all the time? Why must it flicker?

Smartphone Displays: A Balancing Act
The display is the heart of a smartphone, and its protection is crucial. LED screens, known for generating substantial heat when used at high brightness for prolonged periods, can lead to issues like screen burn-in, where images get permanently imprinted on the display. This excessive heat not only risks burn-in but also drains the battery faster and can reduce the screen's lifespan.
AMOLED displays, when operated at lower brightness, may experience color shifts, affecting the accuracy of color representation and the overall visual experience. To tackle this, Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) is employed. PWM regulates brightness and maintains accurate color reproduction, even at lower brightness levels, playing a pivotal role in preserving the display's quality and longevity.
 
PWM: A Double-Edged Sword
PWM, while preventing display malfunctions, can have several health implications. PWM's rapid light cycles are registered by our eyes but mostly ignored by our brain. However, this does't mean the flickering is entirely unnoticed. Over time, it can lead to eye strain, especially when the PWM frequency is low, and the flicker becomes visible. Extended exposure can cause headaches and, in some cases, nausea particularly in those prone to motion sickness.
The constant flicker can also lead to visual fatigue, making it uncomfortable to look at the screen for extended periods. Furthermore, the flickering from low-frequency PWM can disrupt sleep patterns, making it difficult to fall and stay asleep. Screens emit blue light, which can suppress melatonin production, the hormone regulating our sleep-wake cycles. Honor's Strides in Display Innovation
Honor embarked on its display innovation journey with the Honor 50 series, featuring a high 1920Hz PWM dimming frequency. This was a significant leap from the standard 240Hz found in most smartphones, considerably reducing eye strain caused by screen flicker.
Building on this, Honor introduced the Honor 90 series, equipped with a groundbreaking 3840Hz PWM dimming frequency. This technology ensures the display's backlight flashes an impressive 3,840 times per second, rendering the flicker imperceptible, even in low-light environments. This high-frequency modulation is beneficial for eye comfort and represents a nearly eightfold increase over the iPhone 14 Pro Max and up to sixteen times that of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra or Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5.
While the exact methods Honor used to achieve such a high PWM rate remain undisclosed, it's clear that a sophisticated blend of hardware and software has been employed to set this new standard in flickerless display technology.
