Originally introduced in 2023, SynthID enables the watermarking of AI-generated material across various formats—text, images, audio, and video. In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Google DeepMind confirmed that SynthID’s text watermarking capability can now be accessed via Google’s GenAI Toolkit or through its listing on Hugging Face.
As AI-generated content floods the internet, a study from Amazon Web Services AI lab revealed that over 57% of sentences translated across multiple languages might have been produced by AI. While some might dismiss this as spam, the implications are far more alarming. Malicious actors could exploit AI to spread misinformation on an unprecedented scale, influencing public opinion and even meddling in major events like elections.
Watermarking text created by AI has been a formidable challenge. Unlike embedding watermarks in images or videos, text is highly susceptible to manipulation through rephrasing or paraphrasing by other AI systems.
